Fear Of Dancing And The Dance Floor
I have many a crazy friend. Some would say that I was the craziest of them all. It does not matter. Some of them I know through dancing, some of them I don’t. You want to know something crazy? Whether they’re my friends that dance for a living or my friends who can’t dance at all, they both have a fear of dancing. It seems that this crazy fear is something a lot of people have in common.
They even have a name for it now. Yes there’s a name for practically every condition out there, even people who need to switch the lights on and off seventy times while humming every note of ‘We Will Rock You’ on every off switch before they leave a room! If every one of these conditions is accurate, every single one of us on this planet is crazy and has at least a hundred different conditions. And you guessed it, there’s a frightening name for the fear of dancing, it’s called…chorophobia.
Now I don’t know about you and your friends, but I’m in no rush to send mine to the doctor’s yet…at least not for this reason! I typed in ‘fear of dancing’ into Google the other day and lo and behold, there were 2, 240, 000 websites that mention this. That’s a lot of chorophobiacs! There are hypnotherapists offering services to cure this, it is actually something that affects people’s lives.
Well let me tell you, I’ve been through this journey from start to finish. From sitting in the most comfortable chair in the world in every single room I graced where people were dancing…to being totally comfortable just dancing out of the blue on any London street. I have a dancer friend who also does gymnastics, who has no problem doing a back flip in the middle of his walking and then start dancing as if it’s as easy as 1-2-3, all while people are walking towards him from the opposite direction (credit to Scotty P Maurice).
So what’s the story? How do you get rid of the fear? Well there are basically two ways:
1. Just dance as best as you can and have fun, irrespective of what other people think and whether you look good or not.
2. Learn to dance well, and then as you build competence, your confidence will grow.
Two paths to the same destination. Of course if you choose number 2, number 1 will start to follow and you won’t care what other people think if you know you’re good!
You’ve all seen the first type, they’re dancing, you’re wondering what the hell they’re doing but they seem to be having fun and that’s all that matters. I’m sure you’ve also seen the second type, those really good dancers and thought to yourself, “Well duh, if I could dance like that, I wouldn’t be scared at all.”
Well you want to know something? A lot of those really good dancers are actually deep down scared as well. Time and time again I have seen extremely talented dancers, get ultra nervous and worried right before an audition or performance. They start doubting themselves and become blind to their own capabilities, convincing themselves they can’t remember dance choreographies and routines. And I’m talking about dancers most people would die to be as good as!
When I saw this happening, that’s when it struck me - it’s just a biology thing. It’s your body’s fight or flight response where you suddenly get that rush of adrenaline shoot up your body, jolting into every one of your nerves and making your knees become weak at the prospect of what’s to come. It could be damn good…or it could be damn nothing. And at those last moments what’s more real to you is how you could turn into nothing, the lowest of the low, the bottom of the pit and everything that could go wrong.
It could take a huge paradigm shift, a whole new shift in the way you look at life in general to erase your fear by the first method I mentioned above. In fact for some people they never achieve this shift. Carly Simon is an extremely talented musician who is known to suffer from stage fright (she used to have her bottom spanked because the physical pain helped rid her of the stage fright). If she did not have the competence or desire, she would probably have never got on stage.
But if you choose the second route (i.e. to build competence instead) it is a much more gradual experience where you desensitize yourself to the whole notion of dancing. When you have a problem, it’s usually a good idea to actually put yourself in a situation where you’ll be forced to deal with that situation and become used to it (rather than becoming used to thinking about it and talking yourself out of it).
Once you actually go to a couple of dance classes, it won’t be a big deal any more. Sure, you might still get a little nervous if you are a beginner or not familiar with the style, but you’ll put yourself in there, the fear won’t do nothing to stop you. So go ahead and dance, because there’s always a new chorophobiac just waiting to take your place around the corner (probably sitting in a chair).
Learning to Ballroom Dance
Learning to ballroom dance for me has rekindled my life long live affair with dancing. For many, learning to ballroom dance often culminates with the excitement of a performance or competition. I love the way that learning to ballroom dance makes people deal with issues deeper that just being a klutz and ends up helping them in the long run. Learning to ballroom dance is fun and should not be a painful chore. The art of learning to ballroom dance can really be as easy as walking if you are willing to put the time and effort into learning the different ballroom styles of dance.
Ballroom Dancing
Ballroom dancing is as popular as ever, with the many television shows and movies that feature dancing. Besides the valuable social benefits of dancing, your participation in a regular program of ballroom dancing will produce significant mental and physical health benefits. Ballroom dancing also goes deeper than just dancing. Because it includes so many different dances and styles it is difficult to link ballroom dance to a single history. There’s no doubt, combining grace, rhythm, timing and co-ordination, whilst making it look effortless is probably the most difficult lesson for any would-be ballroom dancer to learn. Ballroom dancing, which includes Latin or rhythm dances like Samba and Rumba, and Standard or smooth dances like Waltz and Tango, has strict rules (as anyone who watched Joey and Mario compete on Dancing with the Stars knows), and no talking.

Dancing is fun, its great exercise and it’s better than sitting around watching TV. As any of you who have taken a group lesson from a good dance instructor, dancing is about feeling. You must learn from the basics up and there are no shortcuts to advance social dancing. Dancing is invigorating and fun and even more so with greater confidence. You should also try to dance with as many different partners as possible to enhance your dancing and practice your leading.

In my opinion, private lessons are the best way to learn to ballroom dance. This is one of the reasons that small groups or private lessons are important because the instructor can work more closely with each individual. Private lessons are more expensive but they also provide individualized attention that can greatly speed up the learning process. On the other hand, group lessons are inexpensive and are a good way to try out a variety of dances and meet new friends. Since group lessons tend to focus on steps and patterns rather than on technique, it is especially recommended that male students take a private lesson every few weeks and use that time to study the technique of movement involved, including how to effectively lead his partner through the figures taught in the group classes.
Learning to ballroom dance is a lot of fun. You can become athletically fit and have fun with romance by learning to ballroom dance. Moves You Need to Learn to Break Dance
Break dance is a dance style, born out of the hip-hop genre, that normally takes place on the street. It has been called street dancing by some dancing professionals. It consists of dancing to music that has been remixed in order to prolong the breaks in the music. A person who does this form of dancing is referred to as a break dancer. Break dancing first began as a way for the youth in the urban cities to get away from the violence of the area. Today however, break dancing is a mixture of dance techniques and athleticism. It consists of difficult moves that require the dancer to have a great deal of stamina and talent.
There are four main break dancing moves that can be performed throughout a routine. These include the top rock, down rock, power moves and freezes. The top rock refers to any string of steps that are performed from the standing position. During a break dancing routine the top rock is typically used to introduce the routine. This form of dance is where dancers typically draw upon other forms of dance.
Down rock is also referred to as foot rock. This is foundation of foot rock and consists of six basic steps. The name down rock comes from the position in which the dance is performed. The dancer normally performs the dance with both hands and feet on the floor. While having his hands on the floor the dancer performs very intricate footwork.
Power moves are the part of the dance that requires the dancer to have a great deal of momentum and physical power. The dancer must rely on upper body strength for these power moves. Some examples of the power moves include windmills, swipes, and flares. These moves are often borrowed from gymnastic moves.
Freezes in break dancing are designed to add flare and dramatic effect to the dance. As the name suggests, a freeze is a halt in the dancing. Freezes can be rated according to difficulty. The more difficult freezes require the dance to suspend him or her with feet off the ground. This means that in order to properly perform a freeze the dancer must have a great deal of upper body strength. An example of a freeze might be a hand stand that is incorporated into the middle of the dance.
In order to properly perform a correct break dancing, there must be appropriate music. The music itself must consist of a heavy beat. The music comes from jazz, soul, R&B. Break dancers often perform to compilations of music taken from difference genres have been remixed to add a heavy beat. The tempo has to be such that a dancer can perform the moves quickly and smoothly. However, break dancers have been known to be able to adapt their style so that they can perform to music that has a slower tempo. This is because the usual person in today’s world will be exposed and often “pressured” into dancing at a variety of events. Therefore someone may encounter hip-hop, ballroom, and break dancing styles all in a very short period of time.
The purpose of this article is to give an overview of the main types of dance and some of the moves needed for each.
Hip-hop is a great dance style to be familiar with as it can be used whenever there is a faster beat. Also, don’t think that hip-hop is just for those with baggy pants and lots of neck chains, anyone can benefit from acquiring this skill.
The most basic element of this genre is time-steps, a name also used for ballet moves. These require that you step in certain directions in time with the beat that is playing. “Step-tap” is one of these moves where you step to one side and then follow with your other foot and tapping it as it lands, continue this left and right.
A variation of this is “tap-step” where you tap with your first foot. You can experiment with many variations of these time-steps and maybe even create some of your own.
Another basic movement which looks great with a fast beat is isolations, where you separate movement in the upper body from the lower body. This can mean moving your shoulders back and forward while the rest of your body is still or swiveling your ankles creating movement while the rest of your body is still. These moves are the basics of hip-hop dance and should help in any club or dance party.
Ballroom dances can be some of the most difficult to perform perfectly due to the high levels of coordination required. However with some very handy tips, you should be able to impress, even if it’s only at your next wedding.
Firstly, always move in a counterclockwise direction and the closer you are to the middle of the dance floor, the slower you should go. This is a helpful tip to remember as it gives direction and purpose which will affect the rest of your dancing. Another easy tip is that if you are a woman, you should start with your right foot as opposed to a man, who should lead with his left.
If you want to impress your dancing partner, try this one technique. Just before you launch off, lean into the direction you will go and lean according to how far you will step. This tells your partner you are ready to go and does not jerk them roughly. These tips will hopefully save you from embarrassment on the slower dance floors where everything is under scrutiny.
Although break dancing may sound like something you would never want to do let alone try doing, break dancing for beginners can give you a few simple moves that will help keep you in time with the beat while helping you relax and enjoy your time spent dancing.
These moves are for the club or disco although you are free to show them off at the next ball or wedding you attend. The first move is the hand glide and just requires you to put one hand on the floor and tuck the other into your chest, then use your free hand to push yourself around until you are spinning on your hand. You can go as fast as you can manage. A head spin is a great looking move which isn’t as hard as it seems, place your head and hands on the floor and spin around. Much practice may be needed!
Not only are these moves fun, but they are great at building muscle strength.
So don’t worry if you can’t master all of these techniques, as long as you got some handy tips then you are already much better off. You are probably now a much better dancer than the average person.
